im an ex-american living in new zealand for the past two years and it still never fails to blow my mind that i can take a $2 coin, walk up to a counter with two $1 items, and perform the expected transaction

Even better, the taxes vary from state to state. In mine we don’t have a sales tax, unless its on prepared food items, like a rotisserie chicken from a grocery store.
All the surrounding states? Sales tax.
You used to be able to do this in Japan, and then a couple of years ago they increased the sales tax, so suddenly restaurants/cafes with prices set in their menus (and so not easily changed without reprinting signs/menus) that USED to be tax-inclusive were now tax-exclusive and I Hate It So Much.
